Miso soup is a broth served before Japanese food like sushi. The most important ingredient for the soup is miso, a fermented soybean paste. The other ingredients for the classic version are tofu, seaweed, and water. All the ingredients are brought to a boil then simmered for 30 to 45 minutes. It can also be made with beef and chicken stock. To intensify the flavor, meat grilled on a hibachi grill is used. Vegetable lovers can add onions, garlic, and carrots. When the soup is ready, it is trained through a cheesecloth. Green onions, French fried onions and mushrooms are put in bowls and the broth is ladled over it.

Sushi rice is essential culinary mastery in Japan. Prepare a perfect sticky white rice with this recipe.

Ingredients
300g short grain rice
390ml water
80ml sushi vinegar

  • Wash rice in a bowl until water becomes cloudy. Repeat washing up to 5 times, or until the water is clear. Drain 30 minutes. 
  • Boil water in a covered saucepan and add rice. Turn heat down and simmer for 15-20 minutes. Remove from stove and steam with the lid on for 10-15 minutes. 
  • Steamed rice is sticky. Stir in vinegar with a rice paddle for the best consistency and serve with a meal, or use in preparation of sushi.

In a hibachi restaurant, the chef always prepares food over a hibachi grill in front of the customers. To prepare the traditional Japanese food, a hibachi chef must  train in the methods of cooking sushi. Other than food and cooking, hibachi chefs must also have entertaining and hosting. Hibachi chefs usually train for about six months. Although some restaurants hire professional hibachi chefs trained in Japan, other restaurants train ambitious and determined chefs on site.

Japanese cuisine has become popular, but only some people feel comfortable when entering a traditional Japanese restaurant, because the table etiquette is quite unusual for most of us.
Concerning table manners, you will find low tables and cushions on the tatami floor but you should remove your shoes before stepping on it. When starting the meal, a wet towel will be offered for you to clean your hands. It is common to start the meal with the phrase ‘itadakimasu’, which means ‘I humbly receive’.
Blowing your nose or munching are considered bad manners in Japanese culture.

Miso has its roots in China, where it existed as early as the 4th century BC. Buddhist Monks are believed to have introduced it to Japan in the 7th century. It was refined over time to become an integral part of the Samurai diet. Industrial production did not start until the 17th century. As Miso evolved over the centuries, different types emerged, usually named after the Japanese provinces where they originated.

Miso was a very vital part of the Japanese diet in feudal Japan. It is still a vital part of the Japanese diet and has lately been receiving international attention.

There are multiple types of sushi including sashimi, nigiri, and maki.  Sashimi is only the meat without other ingredients such as vegetables, seaweed, or rice. It is usually raw fish although occasionally it will be cooked and fish is not always used. Nigiri is similar to sashimi except the meat is placed on top of a chunk of rice. Common meats for nigiri include tuna, salmon, and shrimp. Maki is rolled sushi and is usually wrapped in seaweed and rice.  Sometimes the rice is around the seaweed.  A California roll is a common type of maki sushi.

Going out for sushi or Japanese food? Here are some pointers on how to use chopsticks in order to make your sushi eating experience more authentic. First, pick up one chopstick in your dominant hand and rest it between your thumb and index finger, with the lower part resting on your ring finger. Close your grasp slightly and place the second chopstick in your hand, above the first one. Grip it with your thumb, index and middle finger, then use those fingers to move it up and down in order to pick up food. Make sure your grip is firm enough so you don't drop your food.
